In just the past 6 months, we have witnessed the impact of a series of storms, floods, and landslides on every meal, shelter, and life of millions of households, from houses and roads in Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Bac Ninh submerged in a sea of water after just a few hours of heavy rain. to billions of VND of assets, thousands of hectares of production were swept away by storm after storm, flood after flood in Nghe An, Hue, and Da Nang.
And the losses may not have stopped. In the coming time, the La Niña phenomenon is forecast to continue to cause heavy rains, thunderstorms, extreme and unpredictable tornadoes in Vietnam. Meanwhile, according to the General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2024), "Vietnam has more than 10,000 points at high risk of landslides, of which 40% are located in the Central and Northwest regions." In particular, when watershed forests are gradually lost, the land is exposed to the ceiling. A heavy rain can also cause a fierce flood. Concrete works such as embankments cannot prevent the imbalance of nature but can only be temporarily resisted.
How can floods be prevented from the root?
That's a question that TreeBank has been deeply concerned about over the past year. Our forestry and sustainability experts and the project team have continuously surveyed different flood-resistant tree planting options with partners and local communities in the North and North Central provinces. We aim to find a viable community-based ecological solution across the country for disaster prevention at the root.
Unable to hesitate any longer, TreeBank would like to announce the project "BAMBOO AGAINST FLOODS", which is expected to be implemented from 2026 to 2028. The project launch area is Tay Nghe An (Con Cuong, Tuong Duong, Ky Son), with the goal of planting 200 hectares at the most critical points before natural disasters such as riverside areas, along streams, steep foothills and flooded alluvial areas. This is the watershed area of the Lam River – the point of countless floods in the West Nghe An area. Especially the flood in July has swept away, buried, and damaged more than 7000 houses of mountainous communes here overnight.
We have built a project model "Bamboo against floods" in Tay Nghe An based on the goal of "Building a green shield, saving land, saving villages, and preserving livelihoods". Specifically, the project aims to: (i) build a "bamboo green shield" in riverside areas and alluvial areas prone to landslides, contributing to reducing the risk of flooding and soil erosion; (ii) developing sustainable livelihoods for the community through the bamboo cooperative model, linked to the existing value chain in the locality; (iii) contribute to Vietnam's Net Zero 2050 goal; (iv) connecting and mobilizing the participation of resources in society, especially businesses, in the country's sustainable development goals.
In the coming time, we will continuously update the detailed explanations so that you can better understand the solution of the project.
