Dear friends and partners of TreeBank,
Over the past 12 months, we have witnessed a series of devastating storms, floods, flash floods, and landslides that have affected the livelihoods, homes, and lives of millions of families across Vietnam.
From entire neighborhoods in Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, and Bac Ninh being submerged within hours of torrential rain, to billions of Vietnamese dong in damages and thousands of hectares of farmland washed away by successive storms and floods in Nghe An, Hue, and Da Nang, the impacts have been severe and far-reaching.
And unfortunately, the losses may not be over.
In the coming months, the La Niña phenomenon is forecast to continue bringing heavier rainfall, stronger storms, tornadoes, and increasingly unpredictable extreme weather across Vietnam. Meanwhile, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2024), "Vietnam has more than 10,000 high-risk landslide locations, nearly 40% of which are concentrated in the Central and Northwestern regions."
As upstream forests continue to disappear and the land becomes increasingly exposed, even a single heavy rainfall can trigger destructive flash floods and landslides. Concrete infrastructure such as dikes and embankments may provide temporary protection, but they cannot restore the natural balance of ecosystems.
How can we address floods at their root?
That is the question TreeBank has been asking ourselves throughout the past year.
Our forestry and sustainable development experts, together with our project team, have conducted extensive field assessments of various nature-based flood mitigation solutions alongside local communities and partners across Northern and North Central Vietnam. Our goal has been to identify a scalable, community-centered ecological solution capable of preventing disasters at their source.
The time to act is now.
TreeBank is proud to announce the Flood Resilience Bamboo Project (Tre Chống Lũ), scheduled for implementation from 2026 to 2028.
The project will begin in Western Nghe An Province (Con Cuong, Tuong Duong, and Ky Son districts), with the goal of planting 200 hectares of bamboo in areas most vulnerable to natural disasters, including riverbanks, streambanks, the foothills of steep slopes, and flood-prone alluvial plains.
The project is built around the vision of "Building Green Shields to Protect the Land, Safeguard Communities, and Sustain Livelihoods."
Specifically, the project aims to:
Establish green bamboo barriers along riverbanks and erosion-prone areas to reduce flood impacts, soil erosion, and landslide risks.
Promote sustainable livelihoods through bamboo cooperative models connected to existing local value chains.
Contribute to Vietnam's Net Zero 2050 commitment through ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration.
Mobilize businesses, organizations, and communities to jointly invest in sustainable development and climate resilience.
In the coming months, we will continue sharing more information about the project's scientific foundation, implementation model, and expected impacts, so that everyone can better understand this nature-based solution.
